Satisfied and Striving

“I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything.

I have learned the secret

of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty,

with plenty or little.

For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”

- The Apostle Paul, Philippians 4:12-13

Contagious peace has been the theme on the forefront of my mind throughout this year. The question that stays at the front of my mind is this: How can we, as Christ’s disciples and as a church, find peace in our relationship with Jesus so that others might take notice of our freedom and desire that gift for themselves? This month, we’re looking at peace from yet another perspective. I’ve discovered over time that our peace can be disrupted significantly when we experience anxiety around our finances. Throughout the month of October, our focus will be on how to live as people who are both Satisfied and Striving

Throughout scripture, we read about how people who had very little “stuff” nevertheless experienced real contentedness. We also read about people who had great wealth, yet still experienced incredible distress. It wasn’t necessarily the amount of wealth that made the difference in their lives, but where they found their satisfaction, and how they stewarded what had been entrusted to them. To help us find God’s peace in this area of our lives, we’ll be looking at some helpful ways to order our finances in order to prioritize peace and accomplish great good at the same time.

Please join us each weekend throughout October.

October 6th: How to Be Content from Philippians 4:6-14

October 13th: Running From and To from 1 Timothy 6:4-11

October 20th: More Than Enough from Luke 12:13-23

October 27th: Pressing On from Philippians 3:7-14

This is a time when we’ll focus on stewardship, as well. That means we’ll spend some time talking about hopes for the future of St. John’s United Methodist Church, how God has been providing for our ministry needs through your generosity, and ways that we partner with the church to allow God’s work to continue and flourish. As part of this season of stewardship, we’ll be hosting some financial information meetings to look at our current finances, future hopes, and ways of giving to support the ministries of St. John’s UMC. Please make plans to attend one of these conversations taking place at the church (with childcare provided).

Tuesday, October 15th: 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Sunday, October 20th: 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Tuesday, October 22nd: 5:30-6:30 p.m.

I am praying for God’s best future for this church, this community, and each one of you. May the peace of Christ, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus! I’m grateful for the joy of serving our Lord alongside you.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Grant
